Notes
According to Africanus and Epiphanius, he was the son of Herod (I) of Ascalon. According to Josephus, he was the son of Antipas (I). This genealogy makes him the grandson of Herod (Orodus of Ascalon) through his marriage to Barzapharnes (Burus) Antipas a Dacian Prince thereby reconciling both historical accounts. Norse/Gothic accounts preserve his memory as Ve the son of Bur and brother of Odin. This would be consistent with the historically attested family as presented here as Veballathus the son of Barzapharnes Antipas, and brother of Aulus (Odin) Gabinus.
HEROD FAMILY OF The ancestor of the family was Antipater whom Alexander Jannaeus 104-78 B c had made governor of Idumea. The accounts of his are contradictory Nicolas of Damascus represented him as belonging to the of Jews, but because Nicolas was Herod's minister and Josephus rejects his testimony. Josephus believed that Antipater was an Idumaean of honourable family. The Idumeans had been subjugated by John Hyrcanus in 128 BC and compelled to embrace Judaism. In course of time they came to regard themselves as Jews, The stories of the servile and Philistine origin of the family was spread abroad by Jewish (and later, Christian) foes are to be rejected. There is an occurrence of Antipater of Ascalon on a tombstone in Athens and of a Herod of Ascalon on one at Puteoli.
