The city was founded 16 (27) in May 1703. Then it was called Saint Petersburg, and since then several times changed its name:
- 18 (31) August 1914 - Saint Petersburg,
- January 26, 1924 - Petrograd,
- until September 6, 1991 - Leningrad.
The name of Saint Petersburg returned to the city by the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of September 6, 1991: conducted on earlier this year, a referendum, 54% were in favor of the return of Leningrad city's historic name.
In the period from 1712 to 1918 - the capital of the Russian Empire. Currently, the city Saint Petersburg belongs to the Leningrad region - they are two different subjects of the Russian Federation.
