Il fut un noble byzantin et un chef militaire.
Il fut l'oncle de l'empereur byssantin Isaac II Ange qui le nomma stratège de Cilicie (aujourd'hui en Turquie).
1193, après une tentative infructueuse d'usurper le trône, il fut démis de tous ses postes et aveuglé sur ordre de l'empereur Isaac II Ange.

Sa fille fut mariée au chef militaire Basile Vatatzès.
Son fils Konstantin fut nommé grand-duc de la flotte, puis stratège du thème de Philippopolis où il combattit les insurgés bulgares.
