Notes

St Augustine describes St Ambrose as a pious man who although happy with his vocation struggled immensely with adherence to celibacy. St Ambrose himself was between about 35 and 40 when he left off being Consul of Liguria to become bishop of Milan in 374. He was baptized as a Christian only 8 days before becoming Bishop of Milan. Until this date he was not celibate.
