This is a controversial record that may be under dispute. |
Religion
Bello of Carcassonne de Razi was an Arian Christian, not a Catholic. His Father Guillaume was also an Arian Christian and they were of Visigothic descent. An alliance was struck between the Umayyids of Cordoba and the Dukes of Carcassonne to regain territories that were lost to the Christians (Catholic) faction.
This person is frequently confused by genealogists with the son of William Gelone, a relative of Pepin and Charlemagne who was Catholic and who would have been forbidden to marry a Muslim woman. Bello could not have been the son of William Gellone due to the religious alliances of the Visigoths. And Bera the son of William Gelone would not have been allied with the Muslims.
Count Bera IV of Razès who was the son of Count Guillemund of Razès is not the same man as the Count Bero of Barcelona mentioned by Ermold le Noir, who in 820 was accused of high treason by Sanila the Goth and had a son called Willemund.
This relationship is disputed by some, but recognized as a valid lineage by other. It is the opinion of some historical researchers that this Borrell has been the victim of centuries of rewritten history by both Christians and Muslims for various political agendas (to downplay European connections to the family of Muhammed, and to demonize the Christian Catalonians for the political role in the Crusader kingdoms). Research is ongoing with regard to this family and we recommend that anyone who is interested to post new research in the talk pages for this individual but for this individual to remain in the Rodovid Tree as it is presently configured.
