Religion

Bello of Carcassonne de Razi was an Arian Christian, not a Catholic. His Father Guillaume was also an Arian Christian and they were of Visigothic descent. An alliance was struck between the Umayyids of Cordoba and the Dukes of Carcassonne to regain territories that were lost to the Christians (Catholic) faction.

This person is frequently confused by genealogists with the son of William Gelone, a relative of Pepin and Charlemagne who was Catholic and who would have been forbidden to marry a Muslim woman. Bello could not have been the son of William Gellone due to the religious alliances of the Visigoths. And Bera the son of William Gelone would not have been allied with the Muslims.

Count Bera IV of Razès who was the son of Count Guillemund of Razès is not the same man as the Count Bero of Barcelona mentioned by Ermold le Noir, who in 820 was accused of high treason by Sanila the Goth and had a son called Willemund.

This relationship is disputed by some, but recognized as a valid lineage by other. It is the opinion of some historical researchers that this Borrell has been the victim of centuries of rewritten history by both Christians and Muslims for various political agendas (to downplay European connections to the family of Muhammed, and to demonize the Christian Catalonians for the political role in the Crusader kingdoms). Research is ongoing with regard to this family and we recommend that anyone who is interested to post new research in the talk pages for this individual but for this individual to remain in the Rodovid Tree as it is presently configured.

A History of Aragon and Catalonia - H. J. Chaytor

Musa II, maintained his independence against both Franks and Arabs. Independence apart, the Beni-Kasim had no definite policy; they fought against the Count of Barcelona, against the Christians of Castile and the Arabs of Córdoba, and their alliances were as varied as their hostilities; they lent support to the renegades of Toledo, Muslim subjects of Visigothic origin, who forced the Emir of Córdoba to recognize their independence in 873, under payment of an annual tribute. Musa styled himself "the third King of Spain," and was respected or feared by all his neighbours: Charles the Bald was willing to send him presents. On his death in 862, the Emir of Córdoba overpowered this kingdom, but was soon driven out by the Beni-Kasim in alliance with Alfonso III of Leon, who had even entrusted them with the education of his son Ordoño.
